Building Memories & Passing on Traditions - Iowa Firearms Deer Season

By Rod Slings
Retired Iowa Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Supervisor
CEO/ Founder Hunting and Shooting Related Consultants, LLC
Co-Author Blood on the Leaves

A couple of thoughts cross my mind as “Opening Day” approaches for the upcoming firearms deer season

  • First of all, remember the people we choose to hunt with are our family and our friends. These are very important people in our daily lives and coming together for this annual tradition makes SAFETY everyone’s responsibility.
  • The old “plan your hunt and hunt your plan,” is key to everyone’s safety. Make sure you take time for all the members of your hunting party to know and understand the rules of the hunt. It’s everyone’s responsibility to know when and where a SAFE shot can be made. Understand that shooting at running deer is the number one factor of deer hunting-related shooting incidents.
  • Keep this in mind - before you pull the trigger; know the capabilities of your firearm and your ability. Know what is beyond your target, don’t let “target-fixation” take over, being so focused on your target that all else becomes a blur.

A number of years ago, some of my fellow officers and myself were checking deer hunter compliance on opening day. As we rolled up to an open gate to a field, a line of trucks loaded with blaze orange-clad hunters and harvested deer were coming out to the road. We stepped out to begin checking licenses, and there was a very young hunter that lined up, along with the hunting party. I began checking each hunter and eventually got to this young man. As he removed his deer license from his pocket, his harvest tag had been removed.

I said, “It looks like you had some success. Congratulations!”

He lowered his head and responded, “Umm, no I didn’t get”…and before he could answer a large older man standing next to him interrupted.

“I had to shoot his deer for him this year. We’re meat hunters and I wanted to make sure we filled his tag!”

Even though party hunting is legal here, which allows someone else to harvest your deer as long as it is “tagged” within 15 minutes and before it is moved, I could tell, on this day, this young hunter was devastated. My further discussion with the young man indicted that he had just completed his Hunter Education Course and had been practicing his marksmanship skills. He lost the opportunity to become a successful hunter on that day. This was a chance to gain the confidence and gratification of preparing for the hunt and being thankful for the gift of his harvest. The attitude and actions by the older hunter are NOT the kind of memory you want to imprint on a young hunter. It’s your responsibility, as a mentor, to be the best role model you can be, along with providing direct supervision.

I’m not sure if this young hunter every hunted again after this experience. It’s not always about filling tags and filling the freezer. It’s about building tradition, passing on ethical behaviors and rules of SAFETY, and leaving the peer pressure at home. These are moments of building a lifetime of memories that we, as hunters, can be proud of. Hunting can tell us a lot about who we are and who the people we hunt with are.  Passing on our tradition, our heritage and being a SAFE, ethical, and responsible hunter is what we all need to focus on.

Hunt SAFE!

Four Things You Don't Want to Forget

We brought your “Three Things I Wish I Would Have Had” with advice from our Gun Vault Specialist Alicia. She talked about the three things she includes in her hunting gear NOW, that she wishes she had known about back when she started hunting.

Now we bring you Four Things You Don’t Want to Forget! General Manager Jason Truman share his thoughts on this subject!

“I can’t tell you how many times I forgot the camera. Now that they’re on everyone’s phones, it’s probably not as big of a deal. However, phone flash doesn’t substitute for regular flash.

"Next, a seat cushion. I use one for turkey, when I set up at the base of a tree. You can use one to make your tree stand more comfortable, too. I like the ones with the foam in them so my rear end doesn’t get cold but somehow, I forget it half the time.

"The next one is a little weird. I usually always have zip ties in my truck and I try to remember to grab a couple when I go out.  Zip ties will work in a million different scenarios.  You can make a temporary fix on about anything.  Dare I say, they could possibly be better than duct tape??!! Or even the Nite Ize Gear Ties…they work great, too.

"Meds!  I don’t take any scripts, but if I forget my ibuprofen and get a headache, I’m done! Please make sure you have medications with you and take them as required. A tree stand is the last place you want to have issues due to not taking your medication!”

There are items like these that can sound so simple and basic, but are often the easiest things to forget. Make sure your gear is complete before you head out!

Consistancy Leads To Accuracy

Hunting season is upon us and a lot of outdoorsmen will be hitting the woods in search of their own personal trophy and/or meat to fill the freezer.  Most of these folks are returning to the woods for the umpteenth time but some may be venturing forth on their very first outing.  Regardless of whether they’re adults looking for a new hobby or children following in their elder’s footsteps, they want to experience the thrill of success because they desire to create a lasting memory and possibly provide some healthy alternatives to store-bought food.

Our family looked forward to the season with great anticipation but we spent a lot of time throughout the rest of the year honing our shooting skills so that when the time came, we knew exactly where that round was going once we pulled the trigger.  Hunting woodchucks through the summer months ensured that we’d be comfortable with shooting and range time guaranteed our weapons were as accurate as possible.  That left our own abilities and outside factors as the only variables conspiring to put the bullet someplace other than where it was intended.

Unfortunately, we see a fair number of people heading into the woods that have never even put a round down range prior to throwing on the blaze orange or camouflage.  My wife and I see this on a weekly basis at the local range when people step up to the line and proceed to expend ammunition with seemingly little knowledge or forethought as to where it will impact the paper.  Holes perforate every square inch of the target more effectively than if they had fired a couple rounds of buckshot.  I’ll give some the benefit of the doubt when it comes to limited range time and experience, but others bring an arsenal of weapons and radiate an air of confidence and expertise, right up to the point when rounds are impacting the targets.

10 rounds .223 at 50 yards w/iron sightsGuaranteed accuracy is through practice, practice, and more practice whether it’s with a personal defense weapon or with a hunting implement because consistency, repetition, and muscle memory are the only way you can be sure that the next bullet sent down the barrel is going where you intended.  The guns themselves are capable of a certain level of accuracy depending on their given purpose but that level of performance can only go down hill once you introduce the human element to the equation.   It’s a proven fact that a handgun fired mechanically from a Ransom Rest can put bullet after bullet through the same hole, but have a person raise the gun, look through iron sights or even a scope, then pull the trigger?  Well all bets are off if the shooter hasn’t practiced extensively and become proficient.

Consistency is absolutely key to shooting accurately regardless of the platform.  Mounting the gun, grip, trigger contact, sight picture, breathing, and trigger engagement need to be performed exactly the same way time after time after time if you expect to be even remotely accurate.  I recently told one person that I’d rather be able to predictably put five rounds in the same hole and make the necessary aiming corrections to hit the bulls eye, than to hit it dead center once and have the other four rounds spread willy-nilly around the target.  Calling the shot and putting it where you want every time is the goal and should be practiced before hitting the field or carrying a weapon for self defense.

Choosing and shooting the same ammunition (or at least knowing how different brands and loads perform in your gun) is also quite important.  It’s all part of the accuracy equation because bullets of different weights or designs, and powder loads can drastically change the point of impact at a given range.  Just compare the ballistic difference between a Federal Vital ShoK .270 130 gr with a Trophy Bonded tip  and the same brand but loaded into the Power Shok 150 gr Round Nose.  Their energy levels are different, the points of impact at various ranges are different, and their terminal performance (damage to the intended target) is different.  Pick a specific ammunition and learn to shoot it to the best of your ability and the guns potential.  There’s no wonder why most of the true long distance experts shooting at Camp Perry hand load their own ammunition while paying extremely close attention to the details.

6 rounds .270 at 100 yards w/Leupold ScopeI recently visited the Ocala National Forest Shooting Range with my trusty old Weatherby Vanguard .270 (topped with a Leupold scope) and my new Ruger AR-556 (w/stock iron sights) so that I could do a bit of shooting beyond the distances possible at our local indoor range and let me tell you that I need to practice at those distances a bit more.  The AR proved perfectly capable of satisfactory groups, being limited only by my aging eyes and open sights, while the .270 performed very well with factory ammunition when fired by someone other than myself.  I’m not sure what the problem was but I couldn’t get it to group well.  Jeff on the other hand hit right where he wanted with very nice grouping. I’d rub in the fact that he had two fliers but his overall group with an unfamiliar gun was still better than mine.  The point of this whole discussion is that the guns are accurate but shooters aren’t, so consistent and purposeful practice is necessary to get the most out of any gun prior to hitting the field or relying on it for personal protection.

Practicing to achieve consistency will ultimately lead to accuracy once you know what your gun is capable of and where it puts the rounds when you perform all the actions the same way every time.  So pay attention to all the little things, control them to the best of your ability and your groups will get smaller and you’ll have more confidence when pulling the trigger.  I’ll see you at the range.

Offshore Fishing Report World Wide Sportsman, Islamorada, Florida

Hello everyone, and welcome back to this week’s report!  This week has been a blustery mess as the winds have been blowing 20 knots or better since Saturday night.  The good news is that the winds are forecast to come down on Thursday and should be 10 to 15 knots over the weekend.  With a little luck this hard East/ Southeast wind will blow the current in close to the reef and give us some Northeaset/ East current.  We have been stuck for the past week with Southwest current, which isn’t as desirable for our winter time fishery.  In addition, if the East current moves in, the fishing should be fantastic!  I would predict there will be some Mahi in shallow crushing bait on the reef, and this should ignite the Sailfishing for the season.  The temperatures have been a bit cooler, but we would definitely like to see get a bit more of a temperature drop.  I think this will at least bring in some additional fish to play with for the next week or so.  The offshore scene will have some Mahi in it I am sure, and if the weeds are able to come together or any edges get built, you can rest assured there will be some fish in/on it.  This should also push more tunas in on the deep ledge so the kite fishing should be really good as well with a good variety of fish.  The last day we fished was Sunday, and it was rough.  However, there was an extreme amount of bait stacking up between 160’ all the way in to about 40’ of water, and the King Mackerel’s were ferocious.  These guys should be everywhere over the weekend, so if you are on the hunt for these guys it should be a no brainer.  Speedos and Cigar Minnows will be the bait of choice, with Pilchards coming in right behind.  The wrecks and rock piles on the reef will surely be the ticket to finding these guys, so twist up some #3 or #4 wire and hang on!

The reef and wrecks should remain productive as these areas haven’t been fished really since the past weekend.  With the wind out of the Southeast and the current going up the road (we hope), this should create and ideal condition for the Snapper fishing over the weekend.  There have been a ton of Cero Mackerel in the chum slicks as of late too, so the reef should be on fire.  Live bait should be abundant on the deeper patches, as they have been pretty strong for the past couple months.  If you are looking for Pilchards, check out the shoreline as this wind would have pushed the bait in close.  The Pelicans and Yellowbeak terns will surely give them away so keep your eyes peeled for divebombing and swooping action along the beaches.

Well, that is it for this week! Remember, if you need a charter please feel free to stop by World Wide Sportsman’s Bayside Marina and check us out, as I will be glad to help you out with whatever you need. Fishing report provided by Captain James Chappell 305-803-1321 http://ift.tt/1IWINNW out of World Wide Sportsman Bayside Marina, Islamorada, Florida. I hope everyone has a great weekend, and remember to boat responsibly!

Backcountry Fishing Report World Wide Sportsman, Islamorada, Florida

Throughout the years I have spoke and wrote about changes.  As with everywhere you go there are some sorts of seasonal changes.  In parts its trees and their coloration in conjunction the temps vary greatly and some spots in our Great Country turn white for several months.  Here in South Florida we see different types of fish come and go.  Sometimes it sudden sometimes it is a little more gradual.  For instance some of the World Wide Sportsman Guides are perusing Tarpon in part of fishing excursions and are still coming up aces.  Some Permit are still not out of the question, Both of these quarry typically they would both be gone and off the hunt schedule but, this year every things transitional phase is seemingly slower.  This slower change makes for some very interesting decisions for captions and anglers alike.  Fishing in the shadow of the bridges is very good and the variety is rewarding as well, Grouper, Snapper, Jacks and Snook.  The Bay has a great number of Spanish Mackerel  that have migrated in and more and more will arrive over the next months, and right along with them beautiful big mangroves throughout the bay.  Some Pompano are making a showing as to not be left out.  Also in the moats and other selective spots Sheep head and Black Drum are making an honorable mention.  Right alongside the Snook, in fact the only fish that are the week link right now are trout & redfish.  Even they are found by somebody every day just not in any great numbers.  And after seeing an eleven pound Bonefish the other day hearing more reports of plenty encounters.  Captain Chris Barron catching thirty-six Snook around town, and my last four fishing days fishing between the cape and bridges here at home and catching twenty seven species and having plenty of variety to take to the Islamorada Fish Company Where we had Pompano, Snapper, Grouper, Hogfish, Mackerel, and our platter garnished with Stone Crab and Lobster and was absolutely Fantastic!!  So in conclusion almost whatever you are choosing pursuant chances are it is out there waiting for you.  So come on down to World Wide Sportsman Bayside Marina and get hooked up with one of these crazy talented guides we have here at Bayside Marina and go Catchemup.

There are lots to do and lots to catch, and Fun to have, no matter what the weather. Backcountry Fishing Report provided by Captain Ron Brack (305)393-7448, http://ift.tt/1NcOAU6 out of World Wide Sports Bayside Marine, Islamorada Florida. Take a Couple Hours: Quail Hunting

So months ago I wanted to start up a new blog series about getting in some good outdoor activities with only a few hours to do it in. I started it with an urban fishing trip but unfortunately have not been able to follow it up. Until now! Or should I say this past weekend? A group of buddies and I set some time aside to take part in one of my absolute favorite outdoor activities, quail hunting! We all needed a little break and a lot of fresh air, and this trip did just that! Let’s begin…

Well, first things first let us look at the gear. There were five of us going, and this was going to be the first trip for my buddy’s father’s bird-dog. He had to bring all sorts of other gear that, luckily, I didn’t need to hassle with. The rest of us needed: a hunting license, shotgun, ammo, appropriate clothing, snacks and water.

Don’t have an Arizona Hunting License yet? Pick one up at Game and Fish’s website. You do not need a Migratory Bird stamp to hunt quail, but of course read over the rules and regulations before you head out. (Limit is 15 birds a day this year… good luck filling that though!)

When I talk about appropriate gear, you need to consider where you will be hunting and when. What is the weather going to be like? Is it snake season? (It was cold out so we didn’t have to worry so much about those, but I was still looking where I was stepping.) Dress in layers so you can add on or take off clothes accordingly. Make sure to have some sort of blaze on you (hat, shirt, vest, etc.) so you are easier to spot by your own group and others. Bring a bird/shell vest! Only two of us had bird-vests, so we were doomed to be the pack-mules. I picked up the Browning Upland Strap Vest a year or two ago. Just like the new bird-dog, this was her maiden voyage as well. And I absolutely loved it! Fit nice and secure. Everything was able to be adjusted to me. Held plenty of shells and miscellaneous gear, including water bottles and snacks in the back pouch.

And wear good boots! The areas we hunted had a whole mix of landscapes and ground. Soft sand, hard rock and everything in between. And everything up and down! We went over too many hills to count. Having on my good boots made a world of difference that day… and the ones that followed.

We had a few 12 gauges and a couple 20’s between us. We made sure to keep the two kinds of shells separate, as everyone should! Don’t just rely on the concept that “yellow shells = 20 and red shells = 12”, always double-check! Most of us were shooting size 8, but I had a couple random 7.5s to shoot through as well. Good ol’ Dori the Citori will pretty much eat anything I toss down her!

We pulled off to our first location, and after squelching a minor political discussion we were engaged in, my buddy’s father started the hunt off with a safety meeting. Everyone should do this every time. We talked about watching line-of-fire, when to load/unload, who was going to be where and so on.

Also to not shoot his dog. (There is a special level downstairs for those who break this commandment. Somewhere between lawyers and people who leave shopping carts all caddy-wampus in cart corrals.) This meant no aiming at ground birds, no matter the circumstance, so the plot thickened.

And then to make sure we kept our line consistent. You should always be able to see the person to either side of you and them like-wise. This is where wearing blaze comes in handy. Only two of us were in blaze and with all the hills, washes and whatnot it was easy to lose sight of one another.

The hunt began literally with a BANG! Not more than fifteen yards from the truck, I flushed a couple quail and showed the rest of the group how good I am at shooting under flying birds! We kept moving. It is always a delight watching a bird dog work, and she was no different. This was her first time though, so she was rather timid and not used to the terrain. She had been trained by a professional and graduated top of her class, but the real world is different.

As we made our way, we bumped into something quite large that was just as startled by us. It was a small herd of wild horses! They wanted nothing to do with us and quickly scurried up a hill. One hung out long enough for me to get a picture. He probably knew that I worked for Bass Pro and would include him in a blog. We also bumped into an owl a little ways down the area.

We kept on the flurry-sound of a covey of quail that proved to everyone how hard those little guys are to hunt. They led us all the way to the border of state land, where all we could do is watch as they lounged about in the safety of their new home for the next short while.

We worked our way back towards the trucks and kicked up a few more birds, but no one was able to connect. One bird might have a sore rump though! At the trucks, we caught our breath, rested our feet, hydrated, snacked and started the next game plan. The bird-dog had had quite enough and was done for the day (ground birds are good-to-go!) but had well-earned her rest! She, and a few of us, would have some sore feet the next day.  She may not have gotten on point, but the experience from this trip and those to follow was important for her to gain.

Our next destination wasn’t that far up the way, but did give us plenty of time to talk guns and country music. We came to the revelation that the song Parking Lot Party is more or less the sequel to Redneck Yacht Club, because the people who were partying on the lake weren’t ready to go home yet and just moved it to some asphalt. This probably also gave ample time for my buddy and his dad to discuss such important topics like marriage and what arguments they let us think we win, because the one buddy has his wedding in a couple months.

At the new spot we hopped out and loaded up. We chose a hill in the distance and worked our way towards it. Those on the right side of the line took a few steps before bumping into a mule deer doe, which is pretty neat. I bumped into a rock.

Nothing was really moving until we had gotten over a few more hills and then it was a flurry of excitement. I noticed a nice sized covey moving along in front of us and something caught my peripheral. A couple mule deer does gave me the “See ya!” by bounding away, white rumps shown proudly. Watching the wonders of nature always makes me smile, but we were on a mission! With targets in sight, we closed in on them but came just about as close as the last place.

Clouds moved in and rain started trickling down. It was time to start heading back. In one area, I bumped a few and was able to put down a quail and recover. My buddy’s dad got one in the same area, but couldn’t recover it. One of the guys got himself a nice sized jackrabbit as well! He didn’t have a vest, so being the sport he is, the other of us two pack-mules hoofed it out for him. On the final leg of the trip back, my buddy got a bird and recovered it. And he found a nice little deer shed! Not a bad way to end the day.

We cleaned the animals and headed back towards town. After some grub I had to rush home. The missus wanted to take Christmas card photos, and I was definitely not going to be allowed to have bloody jeans in them! But before I took off, we all were able to take a second and breathe while appreciating what an awesome day we had. And make some verbal semi-contracts to get out next weekend!

Healthy Hunter: Get it Together

So how is the Turkey Day Trim Down plan going? I hope well! I went back and re-read it and realized I forgot a very important aspect of it. In fact, looking back at all the topics we have covered in the more than dozen Healthy Hunter articles I realized I left something very important out. And that is why for our very final Healthy Hunter I wanted to make sure I got it together for you all to get it together. What am I talking about? I’m talking about getting some support for your health and fitness goal! That’s right, getting it together!

Changing up your diet is no easy task. You have to buy all new foods, change up eating times, limit what you intake and all sorts of other tweaks. Since diet is probably 80% of all health-goals, this needs to be your priority. Not just yours, but anyone you live with as well. Whether you have a full house or just a roommate, everyone needs to get together when it comes to moving towards a healthier lifestyle. It will be hard for you to keep up with your black bean, brown rice and grilled chicken breast meals when there are tubs of ice cream and fun-shaped chicken nuggets in the freezer.

One of the biggest difficulties can also be what is there to drink in the house. Having soda around is a huge temptation (and waist wrecker) for many. Perhaps look into getting a second refrigerator to contain your food, so you are not always looking at unhealthy choices. One of those, out of sight out of mind kind of deals.

Also getting onto the same pattern of eating together can be a huge help. Plus just spending that time together each day can build bonds and make memories that last a lifetime. I personally know how hard it can be to keep up with a new eating-routine when there is temptation in the house.

The other part of changing your lifestyle, exercise, could also use some support. If you are new to lifting weights, do not go in their blind. Find someone who can teach you proper techniques. Maybe you have a friend, relative or co-worker that can show you. Nine times out of ten they will be more than happy to help you. Otherwise, look into getting a fitness trainer or joining a workout group. There are tons of ways to get connected. I know that Bodybuilding.com has a community space to join up for free in.

Even if you are an experienced weight-lifter or runner, having someone to work out with can make a huge difference. They can give you positive criticism and pointers. Most importantly they can spot you. Lifting heavy weights can be dangerous, so it always best to play it safe.

I was in the best shape of my life when I had a workout partner at my gym and a personal trainer. Both were older than me (probably double my age) and had a lot of experience that helped extremely. The guy I was lifting with also liked proving that he could “keep up with the young buck” which pushed me to work out even harder so I wasn’t “outdone by the old guy”. So we were both putting up good numbers and getting in great workouts in a friendly/competitive manner. Plus both of those guys liked that I was the youngest Republican that they knew.

So no matter what kind of diet or workout plan or lifestyle change you are going for, reach out to others for support. After all, you are doing this for yourself and them!

I'm All About The Pie! But Which One First?

Dutch Apple PieThanksgiving and the holiday season is right around the corner and I just can’t wait to chow down on all the tasty treats sure to be in every house for the next month or so.  Our house will have its fair share but it might be a little lighter this year than in the past as we try to get our waist lines under control once again, but that didn’t stop my mother in-law from asking what food item we wanted to see on the table because to us, it just wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without it.  I heartily screamed “Pecan pie!…. Cherry Pie!……Apple Pie!…..Blueberry Pie!…..Peach Pie!!!!"  You get the idea?  I’ve got a thing for pie.

Thanksgiving morning would see us hitting the field for a half day of searching down rabbits, grouse, and pheasant in the woods and fields of Northeast Pennsylvania where I grew up.  Grandpa joined us a couple times before his death (even though I don’t remember him firing a shot throughout the day) choosing to spend his time tromping through the brush with his boys and then settling down to a hearty meal followed by an extended nap.  It wasn’t about the hunting so much as about the experience.  We were immersed in the scents of goldenrod, hemlock, hickory, skunk cabbage, swamp muck, and dirty dogs by the time our hunt ended after which we'd return home tired and dirty (with or without fresh meat) to the smells of turkey, cranberries, stuffing, and of course PIE.  I could have devoured the apple pie and forgone the rest if it had been left up to me, but there are rules.

Those are the days I remember and dream about the most when I look back to the years before I met my wonderful wife and her daughter (now my oldest).  We’ve gone on to add another daughter and a granddaughter to our Florida family and it’s about time we start our own thanksgiving traditions like I remember from the past.

My mother’s Dutch apple pie was always right there at the top of the list so she made, alas created, along with a few others for Thanksgiving desert. It always had the right sweetnesss, tartness, and the perfect flakey crust and crunchy topping that served just as well for breakfast the next day as it did at the end of our Thanksgiving meal.  My father and I would almost fight for the last piece a day or so later but he always won out with "Who paid for it?"  That’s al right because I pull the same trick here in my house.

There isn’t much else on the menu I’m looking forward with quite as much anticipation.  Oh sure I like all the other trimmings but it must be the kid in me that just loves to eat the sweet stuff rather than the main meal.  I’d likely be a few sizes larger if it weren’t for my wife rationing the pies and my father insisting that he get the last piece of the season.  Thanksgiving was over when we’d had our fill and the guns were cleaned up after the morning hunt completing the olfactory journey that included goldenrod, wet dogs, turkey, apple pie, and Hoppies No. 9.  It doesn’t get any better than that!

With it kicking into gear, I figured a yuletide blog might help spread some holiday cheer!

(Check out last year’s blog for some helpful hints.)

Santa’s Wonderland is a completely FREE and FAMILY FRIENDLY event we hold each year at our store. Most of our Tracker Boats disappear and the North Pole pops up! We have all sorts of fun activities for everyone to enjoy during the event. Those activities include: Wildlife Carousel, Crafts, Coloring Pages, Letters to Santa, R/C Slot Car Racing, R/C Truck Romping, R/C Train, Shooting Gallery, Zing Toy Arcade and more! Some activities are subject to certain time frames and availability. You can always call us to check on specifics, so put this number down into your phone: 602-606-5600.

The biggest attraction though is the big man in the red suit! FREE pictures with Santa! Kids and families have a chance to see Santa, maybe add another gift to their wish list and get a FREE picture with Santa. You can also purchase photo-packages that can be printed off in-store as well! I strongly urge you to come in earlier than later and to always call ahead to see how busy it is. If it gets busy, we go to the Bass Pass system. What is a Bass Pass? The big guns at corporate do a great job at explaining it, so…

“If the photo line gets above a 30 minute wait, our convenient Bass Pass system will help reduce your wait time. A Bass Pass provides a designated time during the day to return to Santa’s Wonderland® for your photo with Santa.

Once you have a Bass Pass, you have the freedom to explore the store while waiting in a virtual line until your designated Bass Pass return time arrives. When it’s time to return, line up and get ready to share your Christmas wishes with good ole St. Nick. This is why you may not see long lines in Santa’s Wonderland, because our Bass Pass system is in place with several people ahead of you in their own virtual line.

Bass Passes are available on a first come, first served basis each day. Once they’re gone, they’re gone! For your convenience, Mondays-Thursdays are typically days with shorter wait times to see Santa.”

The later you wait into the season to take your photos, the less likely your chances become. I have seen it where by 11AM we are already handing out Bass Passes for the 5PM slot! Check out the chart below for times for Pictures and Crafts.

Also remember that we will be having special holiday hours, as listed below:

Outdoor Cooking Primer - Orange-Glazed Duck

Our Visual Specialist Katie shared this recipe she recently made. She found the recipe on Kraft’s web site and though it called for pork chops, she used it on duck, harvested by her husband Lance who works in our Hunting Dept. She actually used three ducks of varying sizes (which she wouldn’t recommend) and said it was great, so we wanted to share!

Orange-Glazed Duck

Two cups dry stuffing mix
1 can (11 oz) mandarin oranges, drained and chopped
1 C hot water
3 ducks
¼ C orange marmalade
1 Tbsp. Grey Poupon savory honey mustard or similar honey mustard.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Combine dry stuffing mix, oranges and hot water and stir just until moistened. Spoon into 13x9-inch baking dish. Top with ducks. Mix marmalade and mustard and spread over ducks.
Bake 30 min. or until ducks are cooked through. Top with stuffing for a beautiful presentation!

Note: USDA recommends cooking whole duck or goose to a safe minimum internal temperature of 165 °F, as measured using a food thermometer. Check the internal temperature in the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast. When cooking pieces, the breast, drumsticks, thighs, and wings should be cooked until they reach a safe minimum internal temperature of 165 °F.

Approximate Duck and Goose Cooking Times Type of Duck or Goose Roast Grill

So much in store in our Marine Department

Independence Missouri Bass Pro Shops Marine Department is gearing up for the Thanksgiving Day/5 Day sales tab.  We have a good selection of product and have been priming our customers for the specials.  That is a heck of a deal on the Garmin 73SV units!

.

We sponsored a fall Lowrance electronics class.  While the turnout was a little light, several members of a local bass club got some great insight and one-to-one tutorials from our Lowrance pro-staffer and one of our tech-savvy associates!

We also have a new associate that has joined our team in the Marine Department.  We would like to welcome Joy Waters.  Joy worked for a number of years at our Hampton, Virginia store and brings a wealth of salt water knowledge with her.  It is great to have her on board!

Stop by and see us soon!  It is never too early to get ready for Spring fishing or do some Winter fishing on the side!!

Offshore Fishing Report World Wide Sportsman, Islamorada, Florida

Hello everyone, and welcome back to this week’s report!  This week has been pretty good with a decent bite of Dolphin offshore and some Tunas on the hump.  The best of the Dolphin was on weed and debris, with a handful of nicer tunas on the humps and around the deeper wrecks off the edge of the reef.  There were a few current edges that were producing as well with a few Sails mixed in.  We are really in need of a cool front to make its way down here, but we haven’t been lucky enough yet for that to happen.  Once we get one we should start seeing more fish push into our area.  There appears to be decent bunch of fish above us, but until this water cools off a bit, I think it will just be a pick.  The reef is producing plenty of Yellowtails, and Mangroves, and the wrecks have been good with Kings, Mutton’s and Groupers.  A few Wahoo were caught this week as well with the calmer winds, and the divers are already reporting them on the wrecks, so we are getting there, just a slow start.  Plenty of fish around to make for a great day of fishing, but winter time fishing for our area is not in full swing just yet.  We are starting to see more fish move into the patches anticipating the shrimp run, so everything is in line for winter except for the water temperatures.  We will just have to be patient, and it will all come together…it always does!  The Swordfish ledge this past week wasn’t nearly as productive as we had hoped coming off the moon.  I don’t know anyone who caught a keeper size fish, but there were only a few of us that were hooked up at all.  We did have a “big” bite that only lasted a short while before pulling the hook, and then we pulled another one off just below that boat that was estimated in the 20 pound range.  One other boat caught one about the same size and made the release, but there really wasn’t much to it.  The winds have kicked up again as the end of the week is here, but are forecast to come down to 10 to 15 knots over the weekend, so that will make things much nicer.  I would look for the same report for the weekend, as there isn’t much of a reason for it to change.  There is still plenty of bait around, and all the ingredients are there to make for some good fishing, so just enjoy this extended summer because I am sure it won’t be here for much longer!

Offshore Fishing Report World Wide Sportsman, Islamorada, Florida

Hello everyone, and welcome back to this week’s report!  Things have started to heat up this week down here, and I don’t mean just the sun.  It is unseasonably hot for the middle of November, but the fish are still biting!  He weather this week has been incredible, and looks like it will stay nice until Saturday or Saturday night.  There is a chance for some rain this weekend, but the winds are forecast to pick up Saturday evening, and carry on into next week.  I can’t see far enough in the forecast when it will end, but hopefully it isn’t too bad for too long.  The bait this week has been excellent with plenty of Cigar Minnows, Ballyhoo, Pilchards, and even a few Sardines.  The fish have been happy this week, and there were even some Sailfish that stumbled their way into our area believe it or not!  Last November was excellent, and this November has been slow on the Sailfish scent, but great for Dolphin.  This just might be the longest Dolphin season in the history of the Florida Keys….no joke!  They are definitely starting to thin in numbers, but to be able to go out and catch plenty for a few dinners, in November, is pretty nice.  Having said that, there are a few Tunas around on the humps, but the majority of them it appears have moved in on the deep reef, so I would have to say the offshore bite is within a few weeks of being over, at best.  The Sword Ledge produced nicely this week with a few boats catching 3-6 fish per day, but haven’t heard of much over 80 pounds or so.   A lot of little guys out there that are being released healthy, so I am never upset when I see the little ones because you gotta have kindergartener’s in order to have some college graduates if you know what I mean.

The reef and wrecks remain consistent, and the Yellowtail bite is as good as it gets since the Commercial Yellowtail closure.  We are allowed to fish for them on charters and recreationally, using the recreational limits, and the fish have been incredibly hungry.  The sharks are back in pretty good numbers too, so I suppose we can contribute this to the water temperature as it is nearly 82 degrees still.  The wrecks and deeper live bottom are still producing nice Muttons and Groupers, as well as some really nice King Mackerel, Amberjacks, Bonita, and even a few African Pompano.  A few Wahoo were caught this week with the calmer weather, and this fishery is just beginning and will get much better in the next month or two.
