Keep your self hidden from deer with Scent Elimination products

Do You Use Scent Elimination Products when you hunt?  Some hunters swear by them while others feel that if you stay down wind from the deer you are fine.  Scents such as soap, cologne and even body odor can spook a deer fast.  Here are just a few ideas you may want to try along with staying down wind to bag that buck.

Washing your clothes:

Always rinse your washer first before putting your clothes in .  You can use a variety of scent free detergents.  We have many to pick from on www.basspro.com .  After your items are washed with a scent free detergent, put them in the dryer with a scent free fabric dryer sheet.  I would then recommend hanging all clothes outside for a bit .  If it is before hunting season store them in a large plastic bin that has a lid that can be tightly closed.  We also recommend putting your boots, jackets etc.in the bin.  Why some people even throw sticks, leaves and dirt in with their clothes.

Showering:

Shower with scent free soap and shampoo.  Use a scent free deodorant.  Dry yourself with a towel that has already been washed with scent free detergent.  Many times we take all these precautions and then sweat as we walk into our hunting spot.  Something easy and inexpensive, sprinkle baking soda on yourself.  It is scent free and will absorb any extra sweat.  Finally, don’t forget your mouth.  There is scent free gum, and toothpaste.

Perhaps you may think some of these ideas are harsh but we don’t always think about the smells we come in contact.  Consider this, deer can smell even the smallest scent so think about everything you just did.  Now you enter your car.  If you have a air freshener in the car you pick up that scent.  Did you just get gas?  How had a cup of coffee, cigarette, or chewing tobacco.  Think about once you get out of your truck and walk picking up smells from other places into the woods.  A deer will pick up on a foreign smell.

Human odors signal danger to deer as well as they can pick up on six different odors at one time.  Of course the ultimate day out would be to always stay down wind and scent free.  So get yourself prepared for the season by doing a few simple procedures.  Check out below just a few of the scent free items we have in the store or visit us on www.basspro.com for all your scent free products.

Dutch Oven Cooking- Stacking

We had so much interest in our Dutch Oven cooking post, we’re going to explore it a bit further. In the first article, we mentioned “stacking” Dutch ovens…so what’s that all about? Here’s more from our own Tiffany Noble, camping Associate and Dutch Oven cooking expert…and she has included another recipe!

Stacking your Dutch Ovens is a good way to save space and share heat. Stacking is best done when ovens need the same amount of heat on top and bottom. Photo from tbah.blogetery.com

The coals on the lid of one oven serve as the “underneath” coals for the oven stacked on top…and the oven on top helps trap heat for the oven underneath. Items that need more heat should be on top.

So, let’s say you’re making a cobbler, roast, and a stew. How do they stack up? Breads, desserts, and baked items should be in the bottom oven, since they want very little heat underneath. Placing an oven with a cake, pie, or rolls in it, on top of an oven loaded with coals on the lid will burn your food.

Then, put your meat to roast in the middle and the stew on the top. Heat estimating can be more difficult when stacking and you might have to make several tries before you get the hang of doing this. Here are some more tips:

  • Don’t mix and match ovens that require different amounts of heat on top and bottom.
  • Remember to check your food a few more times than you would normally when you first try this stacking technique.
  • Rotate each oven and the lid, every so often, to get even cooking.
  • There are many environmental factors that can change the temperatures of your ovens. Wind might blow heat away, colder air temperature, light rain, higher humidity and higher elevations reduce heat from coals, and heat from the sun can make your ovens hot.
  • A dutch oven holds a lot of heat in the sides and lid. You can move it off of the coals before it is finished cooking and let it finish with just the heat of the pot.

It takes some planning, but an entire meal can be fixed this way, so it all gets done at the same time.

What about the number of coals? As an example, if you’re using three, 12" diameter pots to make your cobbler, roast, and stew by stacking, following are some basic rules of thumb to figure out how much coal to use on each. Remember, in our first post, we said to take the diameter of the pot and add three for the top coals and subtract three for the underneath coals. In this case, that would be 12+3 (15) and 12-3 (9). When stacking you do it a little differently because, as mentioned earlier, the pots absorb heat from each other.

Estimates for Coals on Dutch Oven Stacks Baking Take your total number of coals that you calculated for use, and use ¾ on top and a fourth underneath. Roasting Use half of your coals on top and half underneath. Stewing, Simmering Put a fourth of your coals on top and ¾ underneath. Frying, Boiling Put all your coals underneath.

Now, another one of Tiffany’s fave recipes…an easy one for first-time Dutch Oven cooks…enjoy!

Homestyle Chili and CornbreadPhoto from lodgemfg.com

1 lb ground beef (ground venison or other wild game works, too!)
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 Tbsp chili powder
1 (20oz) can tomatoes, chopped or tomato sauce
1 lg yellow onion, chopped
1 Tbsp cumin
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 lb uncooked kidney beans

Cover beans with 2"-3" water. Bring to boil, remove from heat and let stand 1 hour. Drain and set aside. Brown ground beef with onion and garlic. Add remaining ingredients. Cover and simmer about a half an hour. Then, I mix up a cornbread mix (Uncle Buck’s Cornbread Mix is perfect for this!) and pour it right on top of the chili. After about another half-hour of cooking time or when the cornbread is cooked all the way through and golden brown it’s ready!

Variations: Use black beans instead of kidney beans. Add fresh ground coriander, cilantro, ginger, Smoked paprika, or cocoa. Add chopped jalapenos or canned diced green Chiles for extra heat!

Captain MAck's Weekly FIshing Report

Striper fishing continues to be outstanding, both for numbers and size. The techniques and methods are very typical of August and there has been little or no change in the patterns in recent days. Since that is the case, I can devote a little more time to technique and really get your game tweaked!

Power reeling has been off the hook, and I would actually give it the nod as the best technique. Parker spoons and 2 oz. Chipmunks are the baits of choice. The specifics of the power reeling are varied, but here is what I think is the best technique and why: many anglers want to jig the bait or fish it at specific depths. To maximize the power reeling, drop the spoon all the way to the bottom, or to the top of the timber, and reel it back up to 30 feet, then repeat until you get a bite. The reason I advocate this is simple, by reeling all the way through the water column, as opposed to jigging it in place, you are showing your bait to huge numbers of fish! A stationary bait may get the bite, but by moving the bait up and down continuously, it becomes an extremely high saturation technique.

The Live Herring Downline bite is still very good, and there is a footnote for this technique as well. Many of the fish will take the bait, and move up. This can be a hard fish to catch as upward movement creates slack as opposed to when the fish grabs the bait and swims down pulling the line tight. To counteract this when the line goes slack just grab the reel handle and start cranking until you catch up to the fish. This is not uncommon for this time of year, I am not sure why the fish do this, just be prepared for that type of bite.

Look for the fish to be on the Lower end creek channels or on the river channel anywhere from 30 to 120 feet deep. Trolling remains a viable technique, Chipmunk jigs on the leadcore 8 or 9 colors out will get the bite, and leadcore trolling is a very good way to search for fish.

Bass Fishing is good, especially relative to this time of year. There are plenty of Spotted Bass on the deep humps, anywhere from 20 to 45 feet deep. As a general rule, the deeper fish are a little more stable and easier to catch. Worms are the big producers, drop shots are the favorite rig but the Texas Rig will also produce. Jigs will also get the bite on these deep fish and may get the big bite. An attractant such as JJ’s magic will be a plus. Roboworms in the Green Shiner, Aarons Magic and Prizm Perch are among many good color choices right now.

We are going to upgrade Crappie fishing to good! Like most of our fish, deep is good, think 15 to 25 feet, around free standing brush. Of course a dock with brush in the same depth range is a good structure as are up lake bridge pillars. The Bobby garland plastics are the go to bait right now, but a live minnow on a downline will also be effective. Bridge fishing after hours is also a good choice for the Crappie.  Hang lots of submersibles (green Lights are the best), stagger a spread of live minnows, and a fish dinner should be in your future!

Good Fishing!

Goin’ Rural: Dutch Ovens

There is something so delicious and therapeutic about opening up the lid to a Dutch oven. It’s almost like closing down a session of yoga but with a tasty treat ending. For those of you who don’t know what a Dutch Oven is, it is a cooking device that (I believe by law in 38 states) is a mandatory item for a camping trip or outdoor cookout. There are many different kinds, with all sorts of variations but the basic concept is a heavy duty pot with a lid that is cooked by adding heat to both the bottom and the top of the oven. But that is just the basic concept, which is why we are going to take a closer look at Dutch Ovens in this month’s Goin’ Rural blog!

Now if you clicked that hyperlink above, you can clearly see what I meant with their being all sorts of variations and different kinds. You got small ones, medium ones, large ones, some with legs, some without legs, different handles, lips on the lids and what have you! Like any other possible future passion, I suggest starting in the middle when acquiring your first piece of equipment. Picking out too large of a pot might be a challenge and a smaller pot might limit you on some of your possibilities. Grow your Dutch Oven stash as you grow your skill (and love) for this delicious form of cooking.

Most Dutch Ovens are cast-iron. Which means they are heavy, well-built and give off incredible flavor. Of course you will need to do some “preventative maintenance” on your cast-iron before using. This is known as “seasoning”. Seasoning your cast iron is well worth the work because it will make your items last longer and taste better. First just basically scrub the Dutch Oven clean, using warm water and NO SOAP. Once confident with that, use an oil or solid shortening to coat the inside of the Dutch Oven. Now put the Dutch Oven inside a regular oven that is set at 300 degrees for an hour. This will cause smoke so make sure your doors/windows are open and the smoke alarms are taken out. After that hour, let it cool. Once cooled, the Dutch Oven should be wiped clean of any excess grease. You may have to do this a couple times, but just keep going until your Dutch Oven has a solid black coating on the inside. Viola!

As stated earlier, you actually cook the ingredients that you have inside your Dutch Oven by adding heat to the bottom and the top. You can use wood chips but many use charcoal briquettes as they have a more “standardized” rating to them. Meaning you know about how long a certain amount of certain sized briquettes should burn for, whereas wood chips are wood and can vary quite drastically. Usually you shoot for an inside cooking temperature of 325 degrees. But how many briquettes do you need? Time for some fun math equations!

Take the diameter (D) of the Dutch Oven. Using that number, the bottom number (B) of briquettes should be the diameter minus 3. And the top number (T) of briquettes should the diameter plus 3. So that would look like:

B = D -3 and T = D +3. So as an example a 10” Dutch Oven would be: B = 10-3 and T = 10 +3. You can take it from there.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of recipes out there for Dutch Ovens. Some you can find in a good book and others can be found online (Like on Pinstabook or whatever). There are also plenty of YouTube videos on the subject. Things to remember are that those Dutch Ovens get extremely hot! Have a good set of gloves and a safe area to cook at. This is an outdoor-only thing of course. Got a recipe that you are dying to share or try? Post it in the comment section below. Until next time!

6 Reasons The MUCK BOOT™ Brand Tops Its Competitors

The Original Muck Boot Company™ story began in 1999 with the main purpose of designing the most comfortable, best performance footwear on the market. The demand for a comfortable boot for use in muddy and hard conditions while working for a long time led to the design of The Original Muck Boot Company™ brand footwear. Each boot in the line is expected to give the same 100% waterproof quality and comfort that inspired the original boot design. In just a few years, the Muck Boot line has grown to nearly 40 styles of rubber and leather footwear, all designed to tackle tough conditions in markets including: work, agriculture, lawn and garden, outdoor sporting, equine and pet care. Today, the MUCK BOOT™ brand defines a standard of comfort and quality that is known to exceed the expectations of customers. Quickly establishing a strong and loyal customer base, the brand has become one of the fastest growing lines in the waterproof footwear market.

The MUCK BOOT™ brand is known for their high quality boots. They use the most premium rubber, neoprene (CR-Foam), and Airmesh™ linings in the footwear market. They do not skimp on their materials! Their CR-Foam bootie has a different construction, unique compared to their competitors, that provides the most extreme comfort. This allows the user to have comfort all day long. Unlike most boots, the MUCK BOOT™ brand products keep their original shape unlike other brands that become flimsy and wear down. They are easy on and off because of their shape and construction. Due to their products and shape of the boot, they tend to outlast the competition.

The MUCK BOOT™ products have a variety of features that sets them above other boot brands.

1. They are 100% Waterproof - Thanks to their CR-Foam Bootie Construction they are 100% Waterproof. The products are lightweight, flexible, buoyant and waterproof from top to bottom. It is self-insulating and keeps the user’s foot and lower leg warm and protected in cold and wet conditions. Whether you are cutting down trees in the snow or jumping in puddles, your feet will stay dry, warm and protected.

2. They Let Your Feet Breathe - They feature a Breathable Airmesh™ Lining. This lining gives extreme comfort and breathability by wicking away humidity and perspiration. It is made up of thousands of tiny vertical fibers that let the air circulate throughout the interior lining surfaces.

3. They Feature a Durable, Yet Lightweight Shell - The footwear brand features a Natural Rubber Upper Overlay in which the vulcanization bonds the rubber pieces together to form an exceptionally durable shell that also remains lightweight. It acts as the protective skin for the upper bootie and it is made of high abrasion natural rubber so the boot remains flexible for years. No matter how hard you are on your boots, they will hold up for years down the road.

4. They are the Perfect on the Go Boot - They are Hands-Free Easy On and Easy Off. The 10 mm kick rim and pull tab makes it easy to remove. At the same time, the sturdiness and stretch of the boot from the CR-Foam bootie makes it easy to step into the boot without having to pull it on. This is perfect for when you are on the go or have your hands full when heading out. There’s no more laces and the boot will slide right on.

5. Easy Cleaning for the Hard-Worker - The boots are easy to clean after a hard, messy days of work. The rubber shell and nylon upper are very durable and can be cleaned simply by a spray of water or gentle scrub of soap and water. Armorall® can be used to protect the upper overlays. They can easily be cleaned even after the messiest of jobs.

6. The Additional Comfort - The Removable 6 mm Nitracel TM EVA Sock Liner is added for additional support and comfort.

The MUCK BOOT™ brand fits standard U.S. sizes for men, women and kids based on unisex sizing. They are only available in whole sizes, but they will stretch to fit half sizes. There is a 15 mm toe allowance built into the sizing and they also fit wide widths. The boots are made to standard widths, but the materials will stretch comfortably to fit up to EE. For narrow feet, it is suggested that wearing a thicker sock or putting in an additional sockliner to take up room for a comfortable fit. The MUCK BOOT™ brand is the perfect footwear brand for those of all different professions and lifestyles.

Outdoor Cooking Primer - Venison Eggplant Casserole

Summertime gardens mean generous people bringing in bounty to share at work. Recently someone brought some eggplants in and, being open to new things, I took one. I did some snooping online and found this recipe from the Missouri Department of Conservation and gave it a whirl. It could be retitled Venison Eggplant Lasagna because of the layers. Either way, enjoy!

Venison Eggplant Casserole

1 ½ lbs ground venison (we used 2 lbs)
1 C Marinara Sauce
1 C chopped onions
1 C water
1 clove garlic, minced
¾ C dry red wine (we used Merlot)
3 T olive oil
1 1/2  tsp dried basil leaf
½ tsp dried oregano leaf
1 medium eggplant, peeled and sliced into about ½" slices (1 lb) (I found it easier to slice first and then peel the individual slices.)
½ C olive oil
½ C grated Parmesan cheese
1 package of Provolone Cheese slices (about 12 slices)

Brown venison with onion and garlic in 3 Tbsp of olive oil. Add marinara sauce, water, wine, basil and oregano. Cover and simmer 2 minutes.

Saute the eggplant slices in ¼ olive oil until golden. You will need to do this in two batches, more than likely. Put them to the side on a paper plate and paper towels as you cook them. Once all the eggplant is browned, cover the bottom of a shallow baking dish with them. Spoon half of the meat sauce over the eggplant and sprinkle with the Parmesan cheese. Spoon the rest of the meat sauce over that and top with the provolone sliced. Bake at 350 for 20-30 minutes. Serve with some nice crusty bread!

Bow Review - The BlackOut Intrigue

For years, Bass Pro Shops has offered premium bow packages at attractive prices.  Though, the most recent models including the Kronik XT, Toxik XT, and Blackout SS were marketed for taller, more seasoned archers.

This year, Bass Pro Shops presents the new BlackOut Intrigue, a competitive, single-cam, grow-with-you bow with an IBO of 313 feet per second, 80% let-off.  It maintains its performance at all points of the spectrum, whether it is the shortest, lightest setting, middle of the road, or longest, highest setting.

.

The wide range of draw settings makes it appealing to archers of all ages and sizes.  The draw weight has a whopping 50 pounds of adjust-ability, from 20-70 pounds.  The draw length is just as flexible, starting at 23” and peaking at 30”.

The Intrigue is extremely convenient for all hunting environments, whether out of a ground blind or from the midst of leaves in a tree stand, even if you have to trek to reach your secret hunting spot, as its axle-to-axle measures 31 and it weighs in at only 3.3 pounds.

What might be even more exciting than its variability and convenience is the fact that the Intrigue is offered in purple accent, and in case you’ve been hibernating, purple is the new pink of the archery world.  The riser dons Realtree Xtra with carbon fiber patterned limbs.

Along with all Blackout bows, the Intrigue comes in a complete bow package: easy to use 3-pin Apex sight, 3-point contact Hostage arrow rest, Octane 5” Ultra Lite stabilizer, wrist sling, D-loop, and self-aligning peep sight.

Biggest and Longest Lunar Eclipse in Years this September!

Set your sights towards the heavens on the night of Sunday, September 27th for one of the longest and biggest total Lunar eclipses you may ever see!  The Moon will be closest to the Earth less than an hour before mid-eclipse, thus appearing closer and larger than any recent eclipses.  For those of us in the Central Time Zone, the penumbral phase of the eclipse will begin at 7:40 p.m.; partial eclipse begins at 8:07 p.m.; with the total eclipse beginning at 9:11 p.m. and lasting through 10:23 p.m., a whopping one hour and 12 minutes of totality!  Partial eclipse ends at 12:27 p.m. and the final penumbral stage will end at 11:55.

The Moon should exhibit a deep orange or reddish glow during totality.  This is the light that comes from the sunrises and sunsets on the Earth.  Depending on the amount of particulates in the upper atmosphere due to the several volcanic eruptions in recent months, totality could be a much darker red or even nearly black.

This will be the most favorable total Lunar eclipse for most of the eastern half of North America for some years to come.  Get outside with just your eyes, binoculars, or even a telescope to see this wonderful act of Nature!  Bass Pro Shops has a wide selection of binoculars suited to astronomy that can also be used for other viewing pursuits.

Here’s hoping for clear skies!

Backcountry Fly Fishing Association Presents "The Life and Times of Flip Pallot"

Legend Series Flip Pallot

I count myself as one of the many fishermen out there that can identify the moment and the person that set them on the watery path they currently find themselves following, and I’m quite sure the man pictured above has a lot to do with many, many people picking up a rod of some type, then hitting the saltwater in search of tough fighting and high flying quarry like redfish, bonefish, tarpon, and snook.   Watching “Walker’s Cay Chronicles" on a cold winter morning in Erie, Pennsylvania provided an escape from the brutal conditions I was likely to endure if I chose to go outside and attempt to clear the driveway of its three feet of drifted-in snow.  I normaly chose to stay inside a few minutes longer so I could see where Flip’s travels took him and what locale I was going to add to my "Wish List.”

“Come with me on a trip into angling adventure.  We’ll ride the ragged edge where the fish are big and wild.  From the fabled Walker’s Cay we’ll travel to the ends of the earth, to the loneliest ocean and the farthest rivers in search of the best light tackle action.  We’ll pit the smallest lures and the lightest rods against the toughest fish, and we’ll burn the stories in to the memory of film, on the Walker’s Cay Chronicles."

No-motor Zone RedfishJust the introduction alone sucked me and thousands of others into a world of angling we never thought existed.  Did Flip and the show’s producers know what kind of marital trouble they were causing with a simple half-hour TV show?  All those locations and all those fish infected a lot of people who probably never imagined venturing outside their current region, but their subconscious mind surely traveled while the innocent angler slept.  Little did I imagine living and fishing in the exact area highlighted on numerous episodes would ever come to fruition.  Ultimately catching the same species they made appear so glamorous turned into a lifelong goal as soon as we became Florida residents, and I’m still working on the list.

Flip’s life has followed many paths along the way and there’s no way I could ever do justice to his story, but rest assured that he’s a legend who has spent countless hours on the water with many of the other pioneers in the sport of saltwater fly fishing.  They’re the ones that develop the tackle and techniques we employ today, so in a very true sense, we owe our success to the work Flip and his pals did back then.

Spending the night of September 10th with the Backcountry Fly Fishing Association at "The Legend Series” sponsored by Hell’s Bay Boatworks is your chance to hear the stories first hand while possibly learning a few things that’ll make you a better angler.  Becoming involved in a club made up of a bunch of guys who share your love of fly fishing, fly tying, or just spending time on the water can’t be a bad thing in itself.  The club helped me to develop as a fly angler, ultimately leading me to writing about and sharing my love of the sport.  I’m no John Gierach, or Norman Maclean when it comes to storytelling but we all share something in common with Flip and his friends, and that’s passion.

Make plans to spend the evening with Flip and some new friends (and possibly some new fishing partners) on Thursday, September 10th.  It’s sure to be a gathering you won’t soon forget.

Healthy Hunter: Rest

So I am always amazed when I find some older song that I have never heard before. Several times in my life has this happened. And of course I will bring up this song to others, and they always say “How have you never heard that song before?” And I have a theory that you discover a song, when you need it most. The latest song that this all is stemming from is “I’m In a Hurry” by Alabama. And I believe it works perfectly with this month’s healthy hunter article on rest!

For those of you who don’t know the song you can listen to a live version here. But the lyrics contain the lines:

“I’m in a hurry to get things done
Oh, I rush and rush until life’s no fun
All I really gotta do is live and die
But, I’m in a hurry and don’t know why”

Which let’s face it, is true. Everyone is rushing from one thing to the next. I love watching people speed around the streets just to get to what else but a red light faster. With everything so hectic, it is extremely important to get yourself enough rest and recovery.

As we all know, we need about 8 hours of sleep a day. Do we get that? Probably not. People will stay up later than they should for several (and sometimes stupid) reasons. Getting enough sleep should always be a daily priority. If others can’t understand that then let them drain their adrenals without you.

When you watch TV what are the most common commercials? Insurance. Cars. Medication. People have to turn to medication to help them get to sleep. I believe this is because of over-stimulation. As soon as you are up it is pretty much go-go-go. That amazing device that can pretty much contain the entire world in your hand, is usually the first thing you pick up. We use smart-phones for everything! And while convenience is nice, maybe it isn’t the best for you.

How often do you use your phone as an alarm? How often do you check it during the day? Have you ever laid in bed just playing on your phone before falling asleep? The continual use of this is draining on the human eyes and mind. I think it is extremely bad for you if you use it right before going to bed. That little light coming from it cannot be the best thing to do before falling asleep.

I am also against medication for sleep, but know that in some cases it is the only option. I always suggest looking for a more natural way to help you get some rest. The makers of Emergen-C now have a sleep aid drink mix, that I have tried and quite enjoy. It does help me stay asleep through the night and is not as powerful as a medication.

Once you start to figure out your sleep patterns and needs, you can plan your day around that. You know not to eat directly before going to bed, so that will help you decide dinner. And going from when you wake up you know when to eat throughout the day. Skipping meals is horrible for you, so plan accordingly.

And if you really need help getting to sleep, put on Last of the Mohicans. Three hours of lush green scenery and fiddles in the background will put you out.

Summer Salmon Fishing in Alaska

Every year in the summer months of June or July, I host a group to visit the Alagnak Lodge in the legendary Bristol Bay region of Alaska. This year my planning had a bitter sweet cloak as one of my best friends who is the marketing manager had left my and formerly his home state of Virginia to move to Kuwait. His wife had accepted an offer to join a pediatric group there and he will continue to be a stay at home parent. He tried valiantly to arrange a schedule for our annual visit but at the last minute was unable to make it.

This year’s group now consisted of a father with an adult daughter from Virginia and two friends from the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. One of these two guys owns Despedida Lodge. Trust me that’s a long ways to come to go fishing! I could only hope they would think this arduous amount of travel was worth the effort! I had completed the planning for the group to meet in Anchorage and travel from there to King Salmon where we boarded a chartered float plane for the half hour ride over the tundra to the lodge. All went well and we all enjoyed a low calm flight where we saw nesting swans and some groups of the young born earlier.

Once at the lodge we were shown to our rooms where the guides had placed the luggage while we were provided lunch and a brief introduction to the planned fishing periods. We assembled gear and gathered at the dock. It was explained in pre-trip letters that we would be targeting Chum (Dog) Salmon during our week. This species is known for its explosive strikes and strong, long runs. We attached short four foot 20 lb. fluorocarbon leader to the floating fly lines. The guides provided and tied on their own versions of flies that were pink, purple and mylar blend flash material with loop knots that allowed the flies to articulate. The guide selected a sand bar a short distance from the dock still in view of the lodge and anchored.

Alagnak guides performed brief but necessary boat safety explanations then make suggestions about casting weighted flies in the company of others! This is one case when a tight loop is not proper! The fishermen have a choice of casting from the boat or wading on a hard sand bottom in three feet of water. The fish are constantly coming across the sand bar in waves….wave, after wave, after wave. This is great fun for the fishers that are paired. Double hook ups are very, very common. The cast is made at 45 degrees downstream and the fly is allowed to swing in the current until below the angler then left to sway in the current a bit before a slow erratic retrieve.

During our visit the third week in July the King Salmon (Chinook) should have completed their run….those trolling incoming tides using very stout boat rods with wobbling lures were still catching very large bright fish! Sockeye Salmon (Red Salmon) were still around but not in great numbers. An early Silver (Coho Salmon) was caught the day we departed, early for that run. All salmon species on the Alagnak were long and strong. This river is legendary in supporting species and good upriver Rainbow Trout fishing as well. Fly outs were available daily but no one felt they were needed with what was right at the lodge!

The steps (48) from the lodge to river seemed a bit steeper this year as I am dangerously close to 8 decades use of life’s calendar. I plan to be there next year and already have a few committed to the group.  If all goes as I plan it I will be returning to Nicaragua for a demonstration to guides of the Rio Indio Lodge.  The New Guinea trip for this November is ALMOST the bottom of my bucket list…we shall see?

Product Spotlight - Under Armour ColdGear Infrared Scent Control Balaclava

It may still be warm, but cold weather WILL be here before you know it. Customer Service/Receiving Manager Dan Stephany purchased one last year and had the perfect opportunity to break it in during our peak below zero temps in January.

Under Armour ColdGear Infrared Scent Control Balaclava

Dan explains the three main reasons he thinks this Under Armour ColdGear Balaclava is worth the price.

First, the infrared technology really kept my face warm and the lining didn’t allow the wind to cut through. It also allowed me to have most of my head covered and, since we lose the largest amount of heat through our head, that helped me retain heat and sit on a stand for a longer amount of time in below-zero wind chills.

Second reason - it’s great to wear for the dreaded winter chore of clearing the driveway with a snow blower. The snow thrown back in the wind, doesn’t go down my neck. I can pull it down under the tip of my nose and wear goggles, too.

Last, but not least, when worn over your mouth the balaclava filters your breath and helps in additional scent control. The versatility of the balaclava is great. I can pull it down under my nose, up over my nose, off face or pulled down completely as a gaiter.

The inside material reflects and retains your body heat to warm you on those bitterly cold days, while the scent control helps keep you undetected by reducing odors.

Don’t be wishing your head was warm…be prepared for winter’s blasts!

Best Sellers and Whats new in Archery!

Now is the time to stop in and check out the new compound bows, as well as crossbows we have in.  We also have a variety of our best sellers to take a look at.  Questions on what to buy?  Our expert associates in the Archery Department will help you with your decision.  I asked one of our Archery associates what to look for when buying a crossbow or a compound bow.

With both bows you need to take into account your budget, draw weight, and the features it may or may not come with.  This is a large investment and you need to feel comfortable with it and confident using it.  Bob from our Archery Department stated that with a crossbow you have to really try cocking it to see which way you prefer. Do you prefer manual, crank, or rope. Another important fact is when buying a crossbow , are their weights.  Some are very heavy and you should take this into account when walking a long ways into your hunting spot.

Finally Bob, from our Archery Department says you just have to come in and try try try.  Hold them, shoot them until you find the one that is just right for you.
