Choosing the right handgun is like talking about your favorite make of vehicle with your friends. Unless you and all your friends are alike, you are going to get a different response from all of them, whether it’s Dodge, Ford, or Chevy or Smith, Sig, or Glock. Everyone has their favorite. However, when it comes down to choosing a handgun, you should not go by manufacturer.
The Fit
I’ve read a lot of blogs and this is one thing that I have yet to see in any of them. The fit is the most important part of selecting your handgun. If the gun is too big or too small for your hand then your performance with that weapon is not going to be ideal. The handgun should fit perfectly and comfortably into your hand and you should not have to make an adjustment to manipulate the magazine release or to reach the trigger. If you have to make an adjustment then the handgun is too big for you.
The Caliber
The best caliber to pick is the biggest and loudest right? You still have to be able to manage the weapon and control the recoil. If you can handle a .44 magnum round, then have at it, but remember you want to choose the right caliber for the job too. In most scenarios I recommend a 9mm, 40 caliber or .357 round. Your average person is going to be able to handle one of those calibers with relative ease and manage the recoil to effectively get back on target.
Reliability
There are numerous manufacturers of guns out there, some have been around for a very long time and that is because they make a reliable handgun. What makes a handgun reliable though? This is very simple. The average Joe or Jane, unless they are preparing for a zombie apocalypse, is not going to be out rolling around in the mud, playing in the sand, or swimming covertly up a river to take out a target. They are going to have the gun for home protection, target practice, in their purse or on their hip while they go to the grocery store, out to eat or down to the gas station. If the gun goes bang every time you pull the trigger, and the round hits what you are aiming at, then it is reliable.
Make the Choice
Maybe you like revolvers; maybe you like semi-auto, hammer or striker fire. So, which one are you going to choose? I say pick the one you are comfortable with and like the aesthetics of. Go to a shooting range that allows you to rent guns and shoot the handgun you are considering, you may find the handgun you were looking at is not the one for you and that revolver you said you would never carry works flawlessly and conceals very nicely under your shirt.
