The Family that Plays Together...

Do you have a family game night? Is someone in your house a jigsaw puzzle fanatic?

My husband and I recently purchased a bocce ball yard game when our 13-year-old grandson was visiting. It’s just the two of us, and our pup, and while we enjoy patio time every day, and working outside, we don’t PLAY in the yard. However, the bocce ball experience…a simple yard game played not totally by the rules…provided entertainment and friendly competition when it was really too, too hot to do anything too strenuous. Plus, it made us get off our rears, provided laughs, AND was a “not yours” teaching tool for our 5-month old Springer. Suffice it to say, I rekindled an appreciation for yard games. Senior friends of ours (and we’re seniors, too) do jigsaw puzzles. They always have a puzzle under construction. As the days grow shorter, the nights longer, and the cooler weather sets in, I’m thinking a jigsaw puzzle sounds fun. We have some very cool, new, 1000-piece puzzles that appeal to the Baby Boomers - like me! Vintage candy wrappers and board game collages make a colorful collection!

Whether it’s outdoor games, indoor games, family board games, puzzles, or card games, like cribbage, a family that plays vintage indoor gamestogether stays together.  According to www.pbs.org, some of the research-based reasons that family game night needs to return include:

Family bonding time - just like family dinners, family game nights keep the line of communications open and often create laughter…which is the best medicine, of course.

Developing cognitive and motor skills - this isn’t just a “child” thing. It’s important for us seniors, too, and every age in between. The ability to reason, plan, build and retain dexterity & vocabulary is important at all levels, but certainly MOST important for the very young and the very old. Get those brains working and keep them working with some vintage indoor games like Hook a Duck and Tin Can Alley!

Family games can lead to having better students.  See all the reasons above!vintage candy wrapper puzzle

Last, but not least, they’re just plain fun. Step away from the electronics and dive into a yard game, indoor game or puzzle. You may find a new hobby…and rekindle some memories.
